Mission Chandrayaan-2 was India's second lunar exploration mission to the moon and country's first attempt to land a spacecraft on the surface of moon. The Mission was developed by the Indian Space Research Organisation and was a follow-up mission after Chandrayan-1. It consisted of a Lunar Orbiter, The Vikram Lander, and the Pragyan Lunar Rover, all of these were developed in India. The main scientific objective of Chandrayaan-2 is to map and study the variations in lunar surface composition, as well as the location and availability of lunar water.


On 22nd July 2019 Chandrayaan2 was launched by Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV) MK III- M1V from Satish Dhawan Space Centre, Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh, India on 19th August 2019 reached lunar orbit. On 06 September 2019 during moon landing attempt, ISRO lost contact with the Vikram Lander around 2.1 KM away from the lunar surface, in a setback to the India's maiden attempt to land a spacecraft on the surface of moon.

The primary objectives of the Chandrayan-2 Mission were to demonstrate the ability to soft-land on the lunar surface and operate a robotic rover on the lunar surface. Scientific objective of Mission Chandrayaan 2 include orbital studies of lunar topography, elemental abundance, the lunar exosphere, mineralogy  and signatures of hydroxyl and water ice. The map of the lunar surface will be taken by orbiter and it will also help us to prepare 3D maps of lunar surface. While studying the water ice in the in the south polar region of lunar surface the onboard radar will also map the same. The radar will also study the thickness of the lunar regolith on the surface of moon.
