PM Ayushman Bharat Health Infrastructure Mission is largest scheme to scale-up health infrastructure of India. This is an addition to the National Health Mission, as a part of the Ayushman Bharat initiative, which aims to provide universal access to equitable, accessible, and high-quality health care facilities that are responsive to people's needs.
Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi launched the PM Ayushman Bharat Health Infrastructure Mission on 25th October 2021 which aims to address three critical gaps in India’s public health sector; i.e. 1. Augmenting health facilities for effective treatment; 2. Setting up Integrated Public Health labs and elaborate testing network for diagnosis of disease, and; 3. Expansion of existing research institutions that study pandemics.
Highlights of PM Ayushman Bharat Health Infrastructure Mission
PM Ayushman Bharat Health Infrastructure Mission aims to strengthen the critical healthcare network from village to block, district, regional and national level in the next 5 years. To address the different gaps in the health care sector of the country PM Ayushman Bharat Health Infrastructure Mission focuses on 3 major aspects i.e.;
- Augmenting health facilities for effective treatment
- Setting up Integrated Public Health labs and elaborate testing network for diagnosis of disease, and;
- Expansion of existing research institutions that study pandemics to make it world-class.
Augmenting health facilities for effective treatment under PM Ayushman Bharat Health Infrastructure Mission
The first aspect of this mission focuses on the creation of elaborate facilities for diagnostics and effective treatment. For this purpose, Government will support 17,788 rural health and wellness centers and 11,024 urban health and wellness centers which will provide facilities for early detection of diseases and enable effective and timely treatment. In these centers facilities like medical consultation, tests, medicine will be available free of cost. To provide care for the critical illness, 35 thousand new critical care-related beds are being added under this mission in 600 districts across the nation, and referral facilities will be provided in 125 districts.
Setting up Integrated Public Health labs and elaborate testing network for diagnosis of disease under PM Ayushman Bharat Health Infrastructure Mission
The second aspect of the scheme is related to strengthening the testing network for the diagnosis of diseases. For this purpose, necessary infrastructure will be developed for the diagnosis and monitoring of diseases. Integrated Public Health labs will be established in 730 districts and Block Public Health Units will be established in 3 thousand blocks of the country. Apart from this, 5 Regional Centers for Disease Control, 20 Metropolitan units, and 15 Biosafety level labs will be established to further strengthen this testing network in the country.
Expansion of existing research institutions that study pandemics under PM Ayushman Bharat Health Infrastructure Mission
Against the backdrop of the COVID-19 pandemic, the third aspect of PM Ayushman Bharat Health Infrastructure Mission bears special significance and focuses on the expansion of existing research institutions that study pandemics. The existing 80 Viral Diagnostic and research labs will be strengthened under this mission. 5 New Biosafety level labs will also be operationalized under the third aspect PM Ayushman Bharat Health Infrastructure Mission. In addition to this 4 new National institutes of Virology and a National Institute for One Health would be established. World Health Organization (WHO) regional research platform for South Asia will also help in strengthening this network.
PM Ayushman Bharat Health Infrastructure Mission Essay
PM Ayushman Bharat Health Infrastructure Mission also looks to boost the availability of health professionals, correct the imbalance of distribution of medical colleges in different regions and make better use of district hospital infrastructure. For this purpose around 157 new medical colleges are being established across the country in the span of three-phase of the project out of which 63 of them are presently operational. In addition to this, Prime Minister has also inaugurated nine medical colleges during his recent visit to Uttar Pradesh.
